Ex-MLA Hawkins dies of cancer

Former Kelowna-Mission MLA Sindi Hawkins died yesterday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Hawkins, 52, passed away in Calgary from acute myeloid leukemia. Her family was by her side. She was first diagnosed with the disease in 2004 and had received a bone marrow transplant from her sister Seema.

Hawkins spoke to Metro about the ordeal in 2006.

“The hardest part for me, as a child, was watching my mother suffer when she knew what I was going through … I knew her heart was breaking and I felt helpless.”

Hawkins, a former registered nurse, served as MLA for 13 years and included stints as Minister of Health Planning and Minister of State for Intergovernmental Affairs.
