HALIFAX - Former premier Rodney MacDonald's political career in the Nova Scotia legislature officially comes to an end today.

The member of the house for the riding of Inverness in Cape Breton has resigned his seat, effective at 3 p.m.

MacDonald had earlier announced he was stepping down after the Conservative party's election loss to the NDP earlier this year.

The former gym teacher and award-winning fiddler had a 10-year career in politics, which included stints in cabinet before he became premier in 2006.

MacDonald says he hasn't decided what he will do next, but he is looking forward to spending time with his family.
