Ex-teacher guilty — and not guilty

A former Brampton middle school gym teacher has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting several students.

A former Brampton middle school gym teacher has been found not guilty of sexually assaulting
several students.

But Justice Casey Hill found there was enough evidence to convict Michael Plews, 47, of assaulting three former students, who attended Robert H. Lagerquist Senior Public School between 2004-06 when he taught phys-ed and coached the girls’ volleyball team.

Hill said Plews’ conduct was “suspicious.” But the Crown failed to prove his “assaultive behaviour was sexual in nature.”

“(Plews’ behaviour) progressed from minor touchings to roughhousing, even mauling his students,” said Hill.

Plews’ sentencing hearing is set for Jan. 7.
