Former municipal warden Jim Thurber underwent 25 hours of surgery Saturday and Sunday as surgeons reattached four fingers of his left hand lost in a freak tug-of-war accident in Bear River.

Thurber’s sister, Angela Lombard, said doctors were able to find a pulse Monday morning in two of the fingers.

“He was alert before they went into the operating room and they explained everything. His index finger was probably in harder shape,” Lombard said. “He’s responding to all their commands and they are optimistic. He’s being moved to the burn unit if everything remains the same.”

Thurber will remain in hospital for one to two weeks.
