Expect some of the white stuff

Get ready to bust out your shovels, snow scrapers and winter boots again. A snowfall warning has been issued for Metro Vancouver, with as much as 10 centimetres expected to fall by this evening.

John McIntyre, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said while the dump will be “significant,” Vancouverites needn’t worry about a repeat of December, when snowstorms crippled the city and stranded holiday travellers.

“This looks like a fairly fast moving front and it will be going through in a few hours … and it’s going to warm up a couple of days (later),” McIntyre said.

“The longer range (forecast) looks more typical of Vancouver January and February weather.”

McIntyre said Environment Canada issues snowfall warnings in Vancouver when five or more centimetres are expected in a 24-hour period. “We have criteria for all warnings and they differ depending on what region you’re in,” he said. “It’s (based on) impact. Five centimetres here doesn’t happen very often, so when it does it’s a major inconvenience.”
