Six people were sent to hospital with injuries ranging from smoke and fume inhalation to serious burns yesterday when a large explosion ripped through a chemical plant on Annacis Island.
The explosion happened shortly after 7 a.m. at Delta-based Chemcraft Sadolin, which mixes paints with other chemicals and solutions.
Mike Cornell, battalion chief for the Delta Fire Department, said the explosion blew out windows and part of the back wall of the plant.
“An investigation will have to take place to pin the cause of the explosion down a bit more,” he said.
Cornell said one man was burned quite badly, and might have suffered a few broken ribs.
Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution and investigators from the Delta Police Department, WorkSafe B.C., British Columbia’s Environmental Agency, a Hazmat unit, and roughly 25 firefighters from several Delta fire halls were at the scene most of the day.
