Explosive fire destroys city dump trucks

The Ottawa fire department is investigating after an explosive fire destroyed five large dump trucks early yesterday morning, causing $1.5 million in damages.

The fire broke out at a City of Ottawa yard at 1683 Woodward Dr. at around 1:14 a.m.

About two dozen firefighters battled the blaze for an hour, working against high winds. The fire department said ruptured fuel tanks and the close proximity of the vehicles contributed to the number of trucks lost, but their efforts kept the fire from reaching a sixth vehicle in the row, and flaming fuel runoff from reaching other vehicles in the yard.

The fire is currently being assessed to determine the cause, said Ottawa fire Capt. Greg Golds.
