Police say numerous Chinese residents have been targeted in telephone extortion calls.
Of the nine Mandarin-speaking businesses contacted Friday, at least one sent several thousand dollars through a wire transfer company. It's believed the money was transferred to China.

Between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., the business owners received VOIP (voice over internet provider) calls from a Mandarin-speaking man threatening to harm their family if they don’t wire money.
The threats are unsubstantiated and the investigation is showing that this is a scam, police say.
All business owners contacted police, except for the one who sent money.
Anyone who receives a call like this in any language, police say, should immediately call 780-423-4567.
