Facebook given face: Baby named ‘Like’

An Israeli couple has named their newborn baby daughter “Like” after the Facebook button used to express appreciation on the social networking site.

Lior and Vardit Adler, from the town Hod Hasharon, northeast of Tel Aviv, say they chose the name because they wanted something “modern and innovative.”

“In our opinion it’s the modern equivalent of the name Ahava [Love],” Lior Adler told Haaretz Israeli news agency. “It’s just my way of saying to my fantastic daughter, ‘Love.’”

Unusual names run in the family. Like Adler has two older sisters named Dvash [Honey] and Pie, thanks to their parents’ interest in cooking.

“To me it is important to give my children names that are not used anywhere else, at least not in Israel,” Lior Adler said. The top three girls names in Israel are Noa, Maya and Tamar.

The “Like Adler” Facebook group created to celebrate the newborn currently has more than 1,200 members.

Exclusive Q&A with Lior Adler, father of Like Adler:

Whose idea was it to name your child ‘Like’ – you or your wife Vardit?

All of the names were my idea. It sounded great. After one or two weeks we had decided on that name.

If you have another child, what will you call it?

Probably an unusual name as well!

Are you afraid people will copy the name “Like” and then it won’t be so unique?

At least we were the first to have a daughter with such a name. In Israel in particular, this would be a very unusual and distinctive name.

Are you afraid that your daughter will be teased later on in her childhood?

A little bit of teasing is natural to kids anyway.

What did your relatives and close friends think?

They knew we wouldn’t call our daughter a common Israeli name. Some people are very negative, but we’ve received congratulations from all over the world.
