Fake cops rob casino goers

Don’t be duped by a fake unmarked cop car in the vicinity of Lower Mainland casinos, Vancouver Police said Wednesday.

The public warning came in response to two recent targeted robberies, one of which took place yesterday at 1:30 a.m., and the other at 2 a.m. on May 24. In both cases, a dark-coloured unmarked SUV with a blue flashing light inside it pursued the victims from the River Rock Casino in Richmond into the City of Vancouver.

When the victims pulled over, the suspects proceeded to rob them at gunpoint, say police.

According to Const. Lindsey Houghton of the Vancouver Police Department, real unmarked police cars have both red and blue lights, flashing strobes, and a variety of lights within the vehicle.

The suspect SUV, described as a GMC Tahoe or similar type, is believed to have only one blue light.

“Anyone who may be leaving a casino late at night who feels they’re being followed by a suspicious vehicle should call 9-1-1,” said Houghton.

He added that 9-1-1 calls on a cellphone are permitted at all times, even while driving.
