Family fights off arsonists

A father and son fought off two attackers after their Dover home was firebombed early yesterday.

Police said two masked attackers threw Molotov cocktails into the home on Dover Ridge Drice SE around 2:45 a.m. and started a fire while two adults and their 17-year-old son were home.

Duty Insp. Keith Pollock said the father and son chased the attackers out of the house while getting into an altercation with them.

“They found the one guy and held him until police showed up,” Pollock said.

While police don’t have a motive for the attack, close family friend Jerry Glousher said the family doesn’t know why they were targeted.

“They’re shaken up. Nothing like this has happened to them and they woke up to a fire in the house. It’s scary,” the man said after picking up the son from the hospital.

“It’s got to be random. But I just think Dover is a bad area, and I have always thought that.”

Neighbour Donna, who didn’t want to give her last name, said the area is normally safe and the family “usually keeps to themselves.”

The family was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Police have one man in custody and are looking for a black compact hatchback car with a roof rack and a smashed driver-side window.
