Family mourns Easter loss

An Edmonton family had a sombre Easter dinner yesterday, mourning a 23-year-old man killed in a weekend attack on their north-end street.

The family of the man’s wife spent the day greeting visiting friends and family who created a flower memorial in the backyard of the home on 82 Street and 124 Avenue.

“We’ll forever miss you dad,” read one message on a bouquet of blue roses placed by the man’s wife
and child.

Others placed a teddy bear and chocolate Easter eggs in the backyard.

The family requested their privacy yesterday.

It was reported that 23-year-old Daniel McKenzie was inside the home visiting his friend when he stepped outside shortly before 4 a.m. on Good Friday.

Moments later he was attacked. He left a trail of blood along 124 Avenue.

A car was seen driving away shortly after the attack.

McKenzie was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

Homicide detectives, meanwhile, have interviewed two “persons of interest” and have seized a vehicle they believe was involved in the attack.

Shirley Nowicki, a spokeswoman with the Edmonton police, said in a release that forensic investigators
were examining the vehicle during the Easter weekend.

Detectives are also still investigating whether or not gang activity was linked to the man’s death.

An autopsy of the victim isn’t scheduled until later this week, police said.

It was reported that the man was visiting his friend, 20-year-old Dallas Powder, as the pair were logged onto Facebook before he was attacked.

Powder lived with his grandmother, Hilda Powder, and he was a cousin to McKenzie’s wife Roxanne
Powder, according to media reports.

“I love u and miss u. r.i.p.” read a post on McKenzie’s public wall on Facebook from his wife, Roxanne
Powder.
