Fans’ Dutch dream denied

Gianny Rotterdam is far from Holland, but yesterday’s loss still hit home.

The 12-year-old couldn’t hold back tears at Bubba Ray’s in Halifax. His father, Captein, put into words what Gianny could not.

“Of course we’re disappointed. But I think we can be proud because we came a long way,” said Captein, who is visiting Halifax with his family.

People sporting bright orange shirts were filing out of the bar with their heads down shortly after Spain scored yesterday.

Amanda Van Der Pole and her crew of Holland natives quickly departed from the table they managed to acquire when the bar opened this afternoon.

Netherlands fan Jonathan Gillies said he is “devastated” by the loss.

“You build so much emphasis into one team and then to lose, it sucks it right out of you,” he said above an impromptu “Espana” chant.
