Fans soak it all in on race day

The ferocious sound of Indy cars circling around the track, excitement and anticipation was carried through Edmonton’s warm breeze yesterday.

The seats of the grandstands were filling up all afternoon with a steady flow, and seemingly endless stream of excited and enthusiastic fans.

“It’s awesome, people are so jazzed,” said Stephanie Wallcraft, from Toronto. “It feels the same in Edmonton as it does in Toronto where people really care about the racing … There’s just a good vibe with the place.”

Some other Torontonians sat outside their RV before the race to relax and chat where over 60 fans hung out on Saturday.

“I grew up around cars, and racing with my dad and my uncles, so ever since I was little, they would always take me out to car shows, and drag racing stuff,” said Janet Ruiz of Toronto, sitting with racing friends at the RV whom she met through online racing forums.

For the past 10 years, Ruiz has been around North America to see races, and she noted that a recent favorite of hers was Justin Wilson’s win at Watkins Glen.

However, in this race, it is all about Paul Tracy for the win to her.

Wallcraft has never been to Edmonton before and said that after this experience she would “absolutely” come again.

“It’s a fantastic track and it’s a great event for Edmonton that brings a lot of people in that might not otherwise have a reason to visit the city,” she added.
