Fanshawe Pioneer Village capped off its regular season Monday with a look at the work behind all those Thanksgiving Day spreads — the harvest.
Fall on the Farm gave people a taste of what October may bring in a village during the 1800s and early 1900s.
Those tastes included fresh-picked apples, green beans and turnips, harvesting honey from bees and, of course, lessons about the animals that gave villagers food for the tables.
The exhibit was aimed toward children with a special emphasis on teaching them about the work that went into preparing for the winter, said Julie Colfax, the village’s site and program co-ordinator.
“Children … don’t understand where their food comes from,” Colfax said.
The harvest festival — which also gave people a chance to tryout pastimes from days gone by — also marked the end of the Pioneer Village’s season.
While regular hours won’t resume until May, plenty of special events are on the books through the end of the year.
Those events include hair-raising haunted hayrides, some tamer trick-or-treat fun for kids and a Dickens Dinner closer to Christmas.
