Farmers markets get seed money from the province

Farmers markets and local food producers will receive $1.267 million from the provincial government.

Some of that money will go towards helping the Halifax Farmers’ Market move to a new location at Pier 20. The market has outgrown its current location in the Keith’s Brewery, serving about 6,000 customers each week.

he new location would offer twice as much space and allow the market to open six days per week, instead of only Saturdays. The total cost of the new location is $10 million, much of which has already been raised.

The project has garnered funding support from all three levels of government. Thursday’s announcement targeted direct food marketers around the province.

Four other projects will also receive funding:

Taproot Farms in Port Williams, Kings Co., will get money to launch a community-shared agriculture venture and build a commercial kitchen and roadside stand.

O’Connell’s Family Farm in Upper Stewiacke will receive funding to upgrade its meat-cutting facility and develop a stable location for the Stewiacke Valley Farmers’ market.

The Cape Breton Farmers’ Market in Sydney River will get help for renovation.

The Celtic Country Market in Bras d’Or will get money towards expanding for value-added processing and marketing local products.
