EDMONTON - Police say the first person to ever be murdered at the
Edmonton Remand Centre was likely beaten up over a debt of between $40
A fatality inquiry report says inmate Todd Stevenson,
40, was beaten to death on Sept. 10, 2005, but that his assailants
probably didn't mean to kill him.
No one was charged in his death due to a lack of evidence.
The report says Stevenson was housed in a unit with serious criminals as he awaited trial on drug charges.
told the inquiry their investigation was hampered because of the way
remand centre guards dealt with Stevenson's cellmate and the main
suspects in the case.
Judge Leo Wenden, who headed the inquiry, says he can't make any recommendations in the case due to the lack of evidence.
