FC Edmonton announces big-name friendlies

FC Edmonton is not shying away from tough opponents as the city’s newest soccer club announced some world-class competition coming to town this summer.

Colo-Colo will come to the city a week before a scheduled game against FC Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium on June 20.

The Chilean giants will spend the week training in Sherwood Park prior to taking on the local lads.

A week later, FC Edmonton will welcome Brazil’s Vitoria to Foote Field.

Vitoria will be bringing players to North America in the hopes of shopping their talent to local clubs.
Last but not least, this year’s Edmonton Cup will feature FA Cup finalists Portsmouth FC against FC Edmonton back at Commonwealth Stadium on July 21.

“We’ve got three real good opponents that we think will help grow our players,” said FC Edmonton general manager Mel Kowalchuk. “They’re going to be very tough games, but it will be a very good test for our ball players and we think it will help us grow and be ready for next year.”

The three international matches will complement the rest of FC Edmonton’s summer of soccer friendlies, including its first-ever game against the Montreal Impact on June 16.
