OTTAWA – The federal government will spend an additional $117 million over three years on its EcoEnergy Efficiency Initiative, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver announced Sunday.
The program is meant to encourage consumers and companies to cut their energy use. It calls for new labelling, benchmarking, training and information-sharing tools to help improve energy performance in all sectors of the economy.
“This investment demonstrates our continuing commitment to advance clean- energy technologies and make Canada a world leader in energy efficiency,” said Oliver.
“Improving energy efficiency saves energy, creates jobs and increases energy security.”
The new investment is in addition to an initial $78 million announced last September.
The minister also announced that the popular EcoEnergy home-retrofit program had successfully reached its goal of 250,000 registered homeowners. As planned, the program is no longer accepting new registrations, he said.
