Feds tarnished human rights reputation: Critic

Liberal defence critic Dominic Leblanc took to the podium yesterday to criticize the Conservative government’s position on foreign policy and the lack of response to a Liberal proposal made in June.

“We heard silence for over five months until the Conservative government only last week began to explain a future role,” he said.

Speaking at the University of Ottawa, he said the government has tarnished Canada’s reputation as human rights leader.

“They froze foreign aid, walked away from Africa, and spent over $1 billion on a 72-hour G8 and G20 extravaganza for the prime minister.”

He proposed to rebalance of the three Ds of foreign policy — defence, diplomacy and development.

Also on the Liberal agenda is a renewal of Canada’s UN peacekeeping operations.
