Fees for electronics coming online

Albertans may be facing some new charges on their bills after purchasing a new MP3 player or cell phone because of plans to add new recycling fees.

Alberta Recycling is planning to take its electronics recycling program one step further with new charges ranging from 50 cents to $2 on a variety of electronics.

“It’s mostly everything that you use for personal entertainment, food preparation and things that hook up to your computer,” said Jim Sellers, spokesperson for Alberta Recycling.

The charge covers transportation and break down of recycled electronics into separate materials.

Sellers believes that overall people have adjusted to the fees already in place and that this is fairest way to cover the cost of recycling electronics.

Since 2004, Alberta Recycling has collected two million TVs and computers which already have a $5 to $45 free.
