Female teacher charged with sexually assaulting male student

An Ottawa teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a male student, police said Tuesday.

The Ottawa police sexual assault/child abuse unit charged the woman with sexual assault and sexual exploitation after an investigation began February into allegations that an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board teacher inappropriately touched a male student in late January.

Although Ottawa Police Staff Sgt. John McGetrick said police aren’t naming the student, what school he attends or his age, he did say the student is 16- or 17-years-old.

The alleged incident happened in “a school-related event,” said McGetrick.

Ottawa-Carleton District School Board spokeswoman Sharlene Hunter said the “teacher is on home assignment, which means no contact with the school or students,” but deferred all other questions to the police.

Cases like this are not common, McGetrick said, and “a female accused with a male victim is less common.”

The accused surrendered to police Monday morning.

Jennifer Lynne McCalla, 33, appeared in court Monday afternoon.
