Ferry from downtown to West Van open for business

West Vancouver and the downtown have a water connection again.

The Coastal Runner, which opens to the general public today, made an inaugural crossing carrying VIPs yesterday morning to promote the new service linking Coal Harbour to Ambleside Pier.

West Vancouver Mayor, Pamela Goldsmith-Jones, rode the 70-passenger Coastal Link Ferries-operated vessel.

“It’s wonderful to be on the water. It’s wonderful to notice the tides and what’s happening on the water,” she said. “I believe this is a big part of living in this part of the world.”

The crossing takes about 10 minutes and costs $5 one way or $9 for a return trip.

A monthly pass costs $125.

The service will run Monday to Friday, with the first trip out of West Vancouver at 7:30 a.m. The last trip in from downtown Vancouver is at 5 p.m.

The crossing is a six-month trial that Goldsmith-Jones said she would like to see expanded.
