Festival Court renamed for activist Marion Dewar

Festival Plaza in front of city hall will officially get its new name at noon this Friday, when Coun. Diane Holmes officiates at the commemorative re-naming ceremony for Marion Dewar Plaza.

Dewar, the mayor of the City of Ottawa from 1978 to 1985 and Member of Parliament from 1987 to 1988, died September 15, 2008.

While she was in office, the city made significant investments in public transit, affordable housing and the revitalization of its downtown businesses, including the building of the Rideau Centre.

Dewar was a strong advocate of human rights, a peace activist, and an avid supporter of the arts, having recommended the establishment of the municipal arts centre, Arts Court.
