Festival puts geekdom front and centre

The only Edmonton venue where you can hotly debate discrepancies in Harry Potter books, or learn how to prepare for a zombie invasion, has left the space/time continuum.

The Pure Speculation Science Fiction and Fantasy Festival took place at the Shaw Conference Centre over the weekend.

This year’s turnout was big considering the festival began with only a handful of attendees five years ago.

Merchants displayed crafts, books, art and comics. Local sci-fi and fantasy groups played games.

Among them was Melissa Wartenberg, local mask and fantasy costume accessory maker.

“It’s a good environment,” she said, “really friendly and with a level of intellect that’s hard to find.”

There were performances, a costume party and debates that ranged from serious to silly.

Festival director Brett Jans is the man behind Pure Speculation’s celebration of total geekdom.

“We hope to add more activities, more panels, reach more people and let them know we’re here,” he said.

Guests of honour included actor/comedian/broadcaster Rick Green, of The Frantics and The Red Green Show fame, and New York-based artist, author and game designer Aaron Acevedo.
