Police continue to investigate a fight near a high school in northeast Edmonton Tuesday that left two Archbishop O’Leary students with minor stab wounds and another man with serious facial injuries.
Edmonton Catholic Schools spokesperson Lori Nagy said the two O’Leary students were not part of the original fight but ended up trying to intervene.
“They went to a fight they heard was going to happen and unfortunately became involved,” she said at the school yesterday.
“Luckily their injuries are minor and they will be fine.”
Nagy said the school board is working with police on the investigation and the principal of the school has sent a letter home to parents to inform them of the incident.
“The students unfortunately were there and became involved and I think that alone is a really good lesson on what can happen,” she said. “I think it’s a concern that teens increasingly use weapons to solve problems.”
Police spokesperson Dean Parthenis said at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, the two students, aged 17 and 18, went to an area just east of Northmount Hall on 92 Street and 140 Avenue to watch a fight between other unidentified people.
“At some point the two victims became involved in an altercation with two suspects and a short time later the 17-year-old was stabbed in the back, the 18-year-old was stabbed once in the leg and there was another 21-year-old male who was pepper-sprayed in the face and assaulted and suffered facial injuries,” Parthenis said. “Investigators have a tentative idea of who the suspects might be, but nothing has been officially verified yet.”
Parthenis said investigators are still working on possible leads but no one has been charged at this time.
