Fighting CF, one shoe shine at a time

Premier Ed Stelmach brought out his favourite loafers Thursday to kick off the annual Shinerama for the NAIT Students’ Association.

The program is designed to raise funds for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, with 65 campuses participating in the fundraising process.

This is the 45th year the NAIT Students’ Association has been involved in the campaign.

A summer-long fundraiser, Shinerama wraps up on Sept. 11 with the annual Shinerama Day.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., student and community volunteers will head to more than 20 locations around the city to shine shoes, wash cars, sell balloons and paint faces, all for cystic fibrosis research.

Last year’s fundraising yielded $14,000 for the foundation, but the Shinerama committee has a loftier goal for this year.

“This year my goal is $20,000,” said Shinerama co-ordinator Teagan Gahler. “So far I have about $10,000 raised, so I’m just pushing for the last half now.”
