RUHPOLDING, Germany - Kaisa Varis of Finland, twice banned for doping, captured her first biathlon World Cup event Friday when she won a 7.5-kilometre sprint.

Varis won in 24 minutes 9.4 seconds and had no misses on the shooting range. Svetlana Sleptsova of Russia was 16 seconds behind and Helena Jonsson of Sweden was third.

Varis was twice banned for doping in cross-country skiing and switched to biathlon, which adds the shooting element. She was excluded from the 2006 Winter Olympics by Finland's Olympic committee.

Involved in the 2001 World Championship doping scandal in Lahti, Finland, she was banned again two years later for blood doping.
