A fire in a commercial laundry dryer caused the evacuation of two hundred and eighty occupants of the Mustard Seed Shelter on 44 Street SE this morning.

Fire crews arrived at 4 a.m. to discover the building filling with smoke. The building was evacuated while firefighters extinguished the fire in the dryer. Fans were used by firefighters to remove the smoke from the warehouse-style building.

The occupants were relocated to the downtown shelter for the remainder of the night due to the strong smell of smoke.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but officials expect damage to be minimal.
