Fire department opens recruiting expo

Your weekend won’t be nearly as boring if you get to break down doors, haul fire hoses or rescue pretty mannequins in distress.

The Calgary Fire Department is holding a recruitment expo, open to the public, tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. complete with displays and demonstrations, including vehicle extrication, aquatic rescue and high-angle rescue.

“If people are second-guessing themselves or wondering if this is the avenue they want to take, this event will answer that,” said Jeff Budai of the Calgary Fire Department.

Applicants don’t need firefighting experience or education to apply, but will be put through a series of tests including physical and mental aptitude and medical/fitness evaluations. Food will also be available, as the Fire Cadets are holding a barbecue over the lunch period to raise funds for the recruitment program.
