Fire eats top of pizza shop

The smell of charred wood still lingered in the air throughout the day yesterday after an early morning fire devoured the upper floor of the city’s newest pizza shop.
Firefighters were called to the blaze at City Pizza at 5688 Spring Garden Rd. around 2:15 a.m.
They arrived on scene to heavy smoke and flames in the apartment and loft above the restaurant and had difficulty entering the building on the first try.
Divisional Chief Bryson Wilson said firefighters
had to negotiate the blaze from the surrounding buildings.
There were just over two dozen firefighters on scene with several fire trucks, and the fire was knocked down by about 4 a.m.
The area was blocked off on South Park Street between Clyde Street and Sackville Street, and Spring Garden Road between Dresden Rowe and South Park Street until early yesterday afternoon as investigators continued to look into the cause of the fire.
People on their way to work stopped in surprise to look at the wreckage.
Glass, water and soot covered the street in front of the row of commercial properties.
Firefighters were able to keep flames from spreading into the Dairy Queen on the west side of the restaurant and Your Father’s Moustache pub on the east.
