Firefighters were able to control an apartment fire in less than 20 minutes yesterday, preventing the blaze from spreading to adjacent units.

The fire started in an apartment at 147 Avenue and 53 Street at about 7:20 a.m. It originated under a computer desk in a third-floor suite.

Four people had to be rescued from their balconies; one woman was taken to hospital as a precaution because of a pre-existing condition.

Six others were treated at the scene.

There were fire extinguishers on the first and fourth floors but the ones on the second and third floors had been removed for servicing. The fire caused $200,000 in damages.
