Fires rage in Lamont and Strathcona

Fires in the north of Strathcona County and Lamont County continued to blaze yesterday, with a mandatory evacuation in effect for all of Strathcona County north of Township Road 560 and a local state of emergency declared.

Some 80 additional firefighters and command support have been secured through Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. The county continues to work in co-operation with emergency responders from Bruderheim and Lamont County. In Strathcona County, it is estimated more than 3,000 acres are involved, primarily forest, brush and grass. The grass fires, which started earlier this week, are picking up speed and spreading with winds, a source said.

“The wind and dry weather isn’t helping us and we’re working diligently,” said Vern Elliott, a deputy fire chief with the Strathcona County fire department.
