First flu death with no underlying conditions

A Calgary woman with no pre-existing conditions has died in hospital from influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu, Alberta Health Services said Thursday.

“It was a young Calgary woman who had became ill a few weeks ago, deteriorated and came into the hospital on June 29, was confirmed as influenza A on June 30, and then died overnight,” confirmed Dr. Richard Musto, medical officer of health for the Calgary area.

According to Musto, this patient is the first in Alberta whose death is unrelated to any pre-existing conditions.

Health services is not sure where the patient contracted the disease, and according to Musto, the patient had no relevant travel history.

The woman’s age and identity were not released.

Musto stressed that the vast majority of patients with the illness will not suffer from severe effects.

Three people have died from swine flu in Alberta.
