It was moving day for 55 female patients at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women on Sunday and that number increased by one very shortly after the mass relocation.
The first ever child born in the new hospital was delivered just hours after new mother Shanawa Ismayil was wheeled into her new room.
“I was moved while I was in labour,” Ismayil said.
“It was fun,” she added with a laugh.
Baris Ismayil was born at 10:10 a.m. on Sunday and his mother was very excited to be one of the first patients to deliver in the new hospital for women.
“I was joking with my doctor in pre-natal classes that I was going to be the first one in the new facility and it happened,” Ismayil said. “We made a little piece of history. He’s a new Canadian and he was born in this new facility, it means a lot to us and I’m happy that he was a part of this.”
Ismayil and the newest member of her family, her first child, were released from hospital yesterday.
“We’ve been getting used to each other,” Ismayil said. “It’s been really good.”
Joanna Pawlyshyn, vice-president of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, said the move was quick and painless for the more than 50 patients.
“We moved 55 patients in yesterday in just under three hours,” she said.
“Patients had breakfast in the old facility and lunch in the new. The move went very smoothly thanks to the tremendous support of our staff.”
