Five rescued from apartment building fire

Fire trapped several people on the top floor of a Herring Cove Road apartment building yesterday.

“We had to rescue five people when we got here from the third floor,” said Platoon Chief Mike Blackburn.

Smoke and fire clogged the hallways, leaving the windows as the only exit.

“We had to put a ground ladder up to one window and a ladder truck up to rescue two individuals from the other side of the building.”

Several people were taken by paramedics to the hospital for the treatment of minor injuries.

Police closed down Herring Cove Road in both directions for a few hours because of the fire.
