Flu fears send cruise ships toward Victoria

A major cruise ship company will be making six stops in Victoria after it suspended trips to Mexico due to swine flu fears.

Royal Caribbean International has announced that its Mariner of the Seas will be docking in Victoria throughout May.

David Petryk of Tourism British Columbia said Thursday the announcement would have a major impact on local tourism.

“It’s going to be great for B.C., especially Victoria. It’s projected to bring in $4.5 million into the industry,” said Petryk

Tourism has seen a downfall after five cruise liners announced they would sail toward more profitable European waters.

Petryk is hopeful the new venture with Royal Caribbean will motivate other companies to come to B.C.
