Re: "School bus crash reopens debate on seatbelts," Apr. 12:
While our sorrow remains at the loss of another child in an Ontario school bus, who will look beyond the irresolvable debate on seatbelts to jurisdictions such as Rhode Island, which has eliminated deaths and reduced injuries from all causes on and around its school buses.
In Rhode Island, an adult monitor expedites the boarding and unloading, crosses the children with a STOP "lollipop," ensures the children remain in their "compartments," maintains order, and clears the bus’ danger zones.
John Pham would still be with us if Ontario’s school bus drivers were more completely focused on the defensive driving for which we are trained.
