Food bank set for its biggest drive of year

Heritage Festival visitors won’t be the only ones getting fed thanks to Edmonton’s Food Bank.

For the 26th year, the food bank will be accepting donations of food, money and even unused food tickets at the Heritage Festival in Hawrelak Park this weekend.

“This is the single largest food drive for Edmonton’s Food Bank over the course of the year,” said Marjorie Bencz, the food bank’s executive director. “This event is important for us because it helps us fill up our shelves into the fall.”

Last year the local food bank collected 50,000 kilograms of food, plus over $50,000 in monetary donations and over $40,000 in unused food tickets.

This year, Bencz said the food bank hopes to match those totals.

Edmonton’s Food Bank provides food to about 15,000 people a month through its hamper programs, plus food for more than 300,000 meals and snacks each month.
