It’s the tip of the iceberg … lettuce.
Paul Hughes, chair of the Calgary Food Policy Council is applauding two aldermen for tabling a motion during Monday’s council session to examine the feasibility of a local food policy in the city.
“This is a huge first step, and I am very proud of my city. I think this is something that is important and affects all Calgarians; it’s an early Christmas for Calgary,” Hughes said.
Hughes has been pushing council to develop a local food policy, much like Toronto’s or Vancouver’s, although make it unique to Calgary.
Pointing to obesity, high demand at local food banks and lack of healthy eating, Hughes is ecstatic for what the study can mean for Calgary.
Ald. Joe Ceci and Ald. Bob Hawkesworth are bringing the motion forward Monday that the city looks to other cities’ food policies and ultimately create one in Calgary.
“We’re been hearing from many people about local food gardening and this is out chance to look at what we can do,” Ceci said, adding cities like Toronto and Vancouver have been successful.
“I think we need to examine what other municipalities have been doing,” he added.
The motion would ask for the report to be returned to council in June 2010.
