Model: 2004 to 2008 Ford F-150
Vehicle type: Pickup
Approximate price range: $10,000 to $30,000
History/description: In 2004, Ford began selling what it called the most advanced pickup on the road. This generation F-150 got an all-new body and frame, as well as many new technologies and features. Shoppers and the media took to it right away, and the eleventh-generation F-150 went on to become a celebrated sales success.
Up to 300 horsepower was on tap, thanks to an available 5.4 litre V8 engine. A smaller 4.6 litre V8 developed up to 248 ponies, and a 4.2 litre V6 started the powertrain range with 231.
What owners like: Owners typically love the feeling of safe, confident sturdiness built into their trucks. Most appreciate the ride quality, steering and handling, too. Large payload and towing capacities were a hit with those who worked their trucks, while the premium cabin amenities were praised by folks using the F-150 for family duty.
What owners hate: As it tends to go in the pickup truck world, most drivers wish for better fuel mileage. In the case of the F-150, meager performance was another common complaint-- even with the larger V8 engine on board.
Common issues: Earlier F-150 models in this generation were known for faulty window regulators. Be sure all windows operate quickly and smoothly without questionable sounds. A broken window regulator will cause the glass to slide down into the door, resulting in numerous headaches and an expensive repair bill. Check the condition of the braking system, as many owners report “premature” wear of pads and rotors.
The verdict: A mechanical inspection is advisable on any used pickup.
