Foreign student drowns in lake

An international student from China taken to hospital after being found unconscious at a lake near Squamish has died, RCMP said yesterday.

On Saturday, the 17-year-old went on a field trip to Alice Lake Provincial Park near Squamish with his Bodwell High School classmates. Around 2:30 p.m., he began to experience some difficulties in the water, according to RCMP Cpl. Dave Ritchie.

The student was later found unconscious in the water and airlifted to B.C. Children’s Hospital.
Ritchie said that the teen’s mother, who was visiting her son, was with him when he passed away.

His death is being investigated by the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

This was the fourth drowning death in B.C. last week. A toddler died at Okanagan Lake during a family vacation and a 16-year-old girl died on Hatzic Lake when she fell from a boat and was run over.
