Former CTV anchor enters mayoral race

Despite months of rumours, Barb Higgins, said it was only within the last two weeks that she decided to run for Calgary’s mayor.

The former CTV news anchor announced her candidacy yesterday morning amongst a room full of journalists and former colleagues.

“There have been rumours flying around for months that I was considering this but I can tell you that at that time, I was not,” said Higgins, who left CTV July 22.

Higgins said a number of factors contributed to her decision but mainly, she wanted to be able to share her opinion.

“I have made the decision to jump in to municipal politics because I don’t want to stay neutral anymore,” she said.

Higgins said her former co-anchor would attest to the fact that she’s had a passion for politics for years.

“Darrel (Janz) is sitting in the audience … and he, probably more than anybody, knows how passionate I am about things.”

Higgins said she will be rolling out her full platform by Labour Day.
