Fraser wins big at Merritt Awards

Duncan Fraser took home the award for outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role at the 11th annual Merritt Awards Monday night at Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth.

Fraser won the award for his role as Alexander MacDonald’s brother Calum in Neptune Theatre’s production of No Great Mischief.

Outstanding performance by an actress in a leading role went to Shelley Thompson, who played Florence Foster Jenkins, an unconventional American heiress determined to be an opera performer at Carnegie Hall in Festival Antigonish’s production of Glorious.

Other big winners at the event honouring the best in Nova Scotia theatre were Burgundy Code and Bill Wood winning the outstanding performance in supporting actor role awards.

Code won the female category for Rockbound that played at Two Planks and a Passion Theatre. Wood won the male supporting actor award for 2 B Theatre Company’s production East of Berlin.

Ken Schwartz was given the outstanding direction award for Rockbound.
