Who doesn’t remember surprise bags — all that anticipation of opening them to see the contents inside?
Natasha MacLellan, who co-stars in the Halifax play Naked, uses these much-enjoyed kid bags as a way of describing the popular Atlantic Fringe Festival.
She says the festival is full of theatre performances most know nothing about — until they take to the stage.
“There’s a chance to be delighted about something you know very little about,” she said at yesterday’s festival launch at Paragon Theatre.
“Fringe is known as a way to try something,” she also said. “It’s wanting to try something a little different.”
Different is what people can expect over the next 11 days as the 20th edition of the festival runs today through Sept. 12 at five different venues around Halifax.
“There’s no B.S.,” Ken Pinto says about the festival he’s organized since its inception. “It’s a real festival. It’s a people thing.”
Naked, which co-stars Lisa Rose Snow and is presented by Halifax’s Forerunner Playwrights Theatre, is being performed 11 times during the festival, including tonight at 7:40 p.m. at Plutonium Playhouse.
Snow, who wrote the 20-minute piece, admits she’s “a little bit stressful” about tonight’s debut, but also looking forward to it.
