Furlong chairing Own the Podium board

The architect of Vancouver’s Olympics will now build high-level sport in Canada.

The architect of Vancouver’s Olympics will now build high-level sport in Canada.

VANOC CEO John Furlong was made chair of a new advisory board for Canada’s Own the Podium program, the federal government announced yesterday.

“A new culture of winning was installed in all Canadians during the 2010 Games,” said Alex Baumann, who won double gold in swimming at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

Baumann, CEO of Own the Podium, said the advisory board headed by Furlong will bring the skills and knowledge to focus the nation’s best athletes in their drive for the podium.

The program, which receives $69 million per year from the federal government as well as some private-sector money, was created to make Canada the top medal winner at the 2010 Olympics.

It now aims to make Canada a top-12 nation for the 2012 Olympics in London.
