The architect of Vancouver’s Olympic and Paralympic Games will receive an honorary degree from the University of B.C., the institution announced Thursday.

VANOC CEO John Furlong, who headed the team that organized the 2010 Olympics, will be among those honoured by the university at its spring or fall convocations.

Other recipients include astronaut Julie Payette, comedian Rick Mercer, author Douglas Coupland and musician Dal Richards.

Furlong, who was born in Tipperary, Ireland, competed at an international level in basketball, European handball and squash, moved to Canada three decades ago and is a longtime member of the Canadian Olympic Committee.

Furlong was also president and COO of the Vancouver 2010 Bid Corporation that won the Games for Vancouver and Whistler.
