Gambling, golf and the blues

Any trip that can wrap all our vices into one neat package deserves bonus points. Vegas comes to mind first, but Sin City has the baggage of having “Sin” in its name. Atlantic City offers gambling, but it’s not much of a getaway. Now, the secret is out — Mississippi has the casinos, the golf, and the live music to make it a prime destination the next time you and your boys need to hit the road.

Set along the banks of the Mississippi River (the RiverPark museum is a must-see for a deep look at the character and history of the fabled mighty Mississippi), Tunica has built itself into a golf, gambling and blues destination. With three golf courses utilizing the links style that pairs so well with the windswept terrain — Tunica National, River Bend Links and the Links at Cottonwood — Tunica has arrived on the golf trip map.

As for the casinos, if you have any preconceived notions of what they’d look like in the deep south, leave them home. Gold Strike Casino Resort is an MGM Mirage property that would fit seamlessly in any of the gambling destinations you’re familiar with. Luxurious rooms, fine dining and a sprawling casino floor cement Tunica as a gambling hot spot worth seeking out.
