Games awareness up, support not

Canadians are finally learning where the 2010 Olympics are being held, according to a newly released poll.

The Decima Research study, for the federal department of Canadian Heritage, was conducted in February 2009.

Of the 2,036 Canadians surveyed, 82 per cent correctly chose Vancouver and/or Whistler as the host.

In 2007, the overall awareness of the location of the Games hovered at 61 per cent.

Awareness is lowest in Quebec, where only 76 per cent of those polled know where the Games are being held, compared to 43 per cent in 2007.

However, while awareness is growing, enthusiasm isn’t.

Only 52 per cent of Canadians polled said the Games would have a positive impact on economic opportunities, that’s seven per cent lower than two years ago.

And 15 per cent of Canadians said the Games will have a negative impact.

In B.C., people seemed to have a slightly darker view, consistently responding they believe the Games will have a less positive impact than residents in other provinces.
