Gas station closes due to N.B. prices

Cheaper gas in New Brunswick is claiming another casualty on this side of the border.

Cheaper gas in New Brunswick is claiming another casualty on this side of the border.

Staff at Steamboats Convenience in Amherst were notified on Wednesday the business will close at the end of the month and owners John and Kitty Baxter are blaming the difference in gas prices between the two provinces for their decision. “We really tried to make it work, but when there’s such a huge gap in the price of gas there’s no way we can compete,” Kitty said. “I’m really disappointed with what has happened, but more than that I’m pretty frustrated because it appears as though this government really doesn't care about Amherst.”

She noticed a lot of customers coming to the pumps to buy just enough gas to get to New Brunswick, where the price of gas is six to eight cents a litre cheaper for regular self-serve gasoline.
